Decatur Handyman is a Living Wage Company.
We generally get rolling no later than 9am Monday through Friday and should be at you house no later than 9:30am – provided that you are the first stop of the day.
Saturday is generally reserved for estimates and small jobs, Sunday is reserved for Laundry. We will respond to emergency calls on Sundays, but please expect a five dollar an hour premium (60.00 per hour) for late night service, Sunday service, or emergency calls on Holidays. If we are tight on a deadline, we will work weekends at no additional charge.
Simple Is Best
When our relationship starts, we come out and give you an estimate. That estimate is based on what we THINK the labor hours will be as well as what we THINK the material cost will be to complete the work. Actual cost may vary… Our estimates tend to be ON THE HIGH SIDE under the premise that you would rather be surprised by a lower bill than by a higher one.
Sometimes, the actual cost is lower than we estimated – this happens about 20 to 25% of the time. We don’t charge for what we don’t do, so if we come in lower, then you pay less than the estimate.
Frequently, we hit dead on – this happens about 40 to 50% of the time. If the estimate and the actual cost are pretty close, you pay the estimated cost – especially if the actual cost was 5 to 10% over…it’s just not worth fighting over.
However, there are times when we just blow it – the estimate is WAY under what it will take to complete the work. In that event, we let you know as soon as possible, and we both decide what to do next.
We understand that times are hard. Believe me, they are hard for us as well – but, since we are grateful to be working at all… if you get an estimate from a reputable company which is lower than ours, give us the opportunity to match their price. As I said, we are estimating – if we have to hit at or below a hard number, we may be willing and able to do that.
What might cause us to miss an estimate?
- The incredible expanding scope
When you fall prey to the temptation to have us do “just a few more things – while we’re there”, please keep in mind that the clock is running.
- The amazing changing project
When we (you, the customer – and us, the handymen) agree on what we are supposed to be doing, and then we do it…and you decide that it wasn’t such a good idea – as a matter of fact – you hate it… we will charge you to do it differently.
- The dreaded “larger than it looked” issue
This one happens from time to time. We Start with something like replacing siding and then discover that the reason that the siding was falling off the house was because termites have eaten the studs. We will let you know as soon as something like that comes up. What happens after that is up to you. We can either continue or you can make other arrangements – with no hard feelings on either side.
How do we stack up as far as price is concerned
Well, there is a great site for ballpark estimates HERE
When we come to an agreement on the scope of the project and the estimate (we will accept limiting factors – such as – “it can’t cost more than 1,000.00″, or “it can’t go more than 5% over the estimate without written approval” ), then we sign off on a contract and set up a timeline for getting the work done.
You can download our standard contract HERE
Obviously, well, we go to work on your project. If you have questions or concerns while the work is being done, we are a phone call away. Actually, most frequently, you can just stick your head out and yell – someone who can make a decision is almost always there.
Where We Work
Generally, we accept projects within a 10 mile radius of Decatur, GA. In some cases, we will go a lot further out (sometimes as far out as Carrollton – which would describe a 40 mile radius of Decatur).
However, if you live within 5 miles of GA 400, or if you might logically use GA 400 in directions to your home – in fact, if you’ve seen GA 400 within the last month for reasons other than work – don’t call me.
I’m not kidding.
I’ll drive to Fayetteville for a one hour job before I go anywhere near GA 400. Yeah, I know that the area around GA 400 has a bunch of high dollar homes and high net worth homeowners, but it also has a LOT of buttheads in it. That high a concentration of assholery is hazardous to my sanity.
If you aren’t an asshole, and live near GA 400, I might consider working for you – maybe. But, unfortunately, it seems that assholery is like swine flu, you catch it simply by being around it on a regular basis.
We accept: CASH, CHECKS and VISA/MASTERCARD
Checks should be made out to Decatur Handyman.
